Mama (2013) is a film that explores the themes of motherhood, abandonment, loyalty and fear. The film has a nonlinear narrative that alternates between the past and the present, revealing the origins and motives of Mama, the supernatural spirit that raised Victoria and Lily in the woods. Mama was a former patient at a mental asylum in the 1800s, who had a baby named Lily that was taken away from her by a nun. Mama escaped from the asylum, killed the nun and reclaimed her baby, but then jumped off a cliff with her baby in her arms. However, instead of dying, Mama and her baby became trapped in a limbo between life and death, where Mama's body decayed and twisted into a monstrous form. Mama found Victoria and Lily in the cabin after their father's death, and took them as her own children, feeding them cherries and moths. She taught them to avoid light and human contact, and became fiercely protective of them.
When Lucas and Annabel take Victoria and Lily to their suburban home, Mama follows them and tries to sabotage their attempts to bond with the girls. She also kills anyone who threatens to separate her from them, such as Jean Podolski and Dr. Dreyfuss. Lucas is injured by Mama and falls into a coma, leaving Annabel to take care of the girls alone. Annabel gradually earns Victoria's trust and affection, but Lily remains loyal to Mama. Annabel discovers that Mama is becoming more aggressive and violent as she feels her bond with the girls weakening. She also learns that Mama's original baby's remains are kept in a box at a museum. She decides to take the box to the cabin and offer it to Mama as a way to appease her and free the girls from her influence.
However, Mama rejects the box and attacks Annabel. Lucas wakes up from his coma and arrives at the cabin with his sister-in-law Jean. They find Annabel and the girls on a cliff near where Mama jumped with her baby. Mama kills Jean and tries to take Victoria and Lily with her over the edge of the cliff. Victoria chooses to stay with Annabel and Lucas, but Lily decides to go with Mama, saying that she is her only mother. Mama embraces Lily and jumps off the cliff with her, turning into a shower of moths as they fall. Victoria cries for Lily but is comforted by Annabel and Lucas. As they leave the cabin, they see a moth land on Victoria's hand, implying that Lily's spirit is still with them. ec8f644aee
